Electronic & Experimental in Vancouver: Every October and November Date on the Books

Therapy SoundField notes
Electronic & Experimental listings for Vancouver venues this October and November
October and November, mapped out by room and by sound.

“Electronic & Experimental” is the tag that catches everything else. It is not a genre so much as an admission that a lot of what is happening in this city right now refuses to sit still in one box.

The quick version: this stretch of October and November has a multidisciplinary performance piece at Red Gate, a run of Halloween nights spread across a museum, a warehouse and a nightclub, a DJ set from a well-known indie-electronic act at a theatre normally reserved for concerts, and a handful of rooms doing what they do every week, just filed under a wider net. We are only listing what is confirmed. A few of these are at venues still marked TBA, which is normal for this corner of the scene and not a reason to skip them.

What the tag actually covers this month

Scroll through the listings and you will notice “Electronic & Experimental” sits next to almost every other tag in the directory at some point: Rock & Alternative, Bass & Breaks, Techno, House. That is the point. It is less a sound and more a holding pen for shows that are doing something a little outside the expected shape of a dance night, whether that is a staged performance, a concert-format set, or a club night built around a sound that does not have a tidier name yet.

The non-club end: performance and concert

Not everything under this tag is a DJ booth and a smoke machine. Sook-Yin Lee with Kylie V, Reveal Yourself, and jaye simpson lands at Red Gate Arts Society on Friday October 23 at 7 PM, billed as a multidisciplinary performance, tickets from $20, 19+.

Further out, Sina Bathaie — White Lotus World Tour plays Hollywood Theatre on Monday November 9 at 7:30 PM as a full concert, tickets from $69, 19+. And Eivør with Midori Jaeger is at The Pearl on Tuesday November 17 at 9 PM, from $44.05. Three very different rooms, three very different formats, all filed under the same tag.

Halloween weekend, four ways

This is the busiest cluster in the sheet, and it spans almost every kind of room the city has. Here is what is confirmed for the weekend of October 30 and 31:

Four rooms, four price points, four completely different nights out, all happening within about 36 hours of each other. That is a decent snapshot of how wide this tag actually stretches.

Where it overlaps with Bass & Breaks

A couple of dates sit across both tags, which is worth knowing if you are the kind of person who tracks a sound rather than a label. Lizdek with Synova is at The Pearl on Thursday October 29 at 7 PM, from $22.23, 19+. shmani’s Album Release Party follows on Friday November 6 at 9 PM, location TBA, 19+, price unconfirmed.

Where it overlaps with Techno

Two dates lean harder into techno while still carrying the wider tag. Taste of Iceland presents: Iceland Airwaves Off Venue is free, at The Pearl, Wednesday November 11 at 8 PM. Melt II: Membrane follows on Friday November 13 at 11 PM, location TBA, 19+, price unconfirmed.

The one for indie-electronic crossover fans

If your taste runs closer to the pop end of electronic music, there is one date built for you. Cut Copy DJ Set plays Hollywood Theatre on Tuesday November 3 at 9 PM, price unconfirmed. It is a rare chance to catch a band better known for full-band shows working a DJ set instead, in a room usually set up for seated or standing concerts rather than a dance floor.

Electronic & Experimental is not a sound. It is the city telling you it has not finished sorting itself into neat piles yet, and you should probably just go find out for yourself.

How to pick your night

  • Want a seat and a story. Sook-Yin Lee at Red Gate or Sina Bathaie at Hollywood Theatre are built for listening, not just moving.
  • Want Halloween done loud. Pick one of the four weekend dates based on room size and budget, not just the name on the poster.
  • Want something that leans dance-floor first. Lizdek, shmani, Melt II and Taste of Iceland sit closer to a standard club night.
  • Want a band doing something different. Cut Copy’s DJ set is the one date here that is not really about the tag at all, it is about seeing a familiar act in an unfamiliar format.

Frequently asked questions

What does “Electronic & Experimental” mean as a genre tag?

It is a broad category covering electronic music that does not fit neatly into house, techno or bass, including performance pieces, concert-format shows and genre-blending club nights.

Is there one main Halloween event for electronic music in Vancouver this year?

No single event. The listings show four separate Halloween weekend shows across different rooms: a Friday night with location TBA, a museum event, a warehouse event and a nightclub event, each with its own price and format.

Are all of these events 19+?

Most of the listed dates are 19+. A couple, including the Cut Copy DJ set and the Eivør show, do not have an age restriction noted in the listing.

What should I do if a venue is listed as TBA?

Check the event page closer to the date. Venue details for TBA shows are typically confirmed as the date approaches, and the event page is the most reliable source for updates.
